Former European pairs champions Yuko Kavaguti and Alexander Smirnov will miss this month's European Championships because the latter has not recovered from appendix surgery.
"Alex had surgery to remove his appendix just a week ago and under these circumstances we decided it would be better not to take unnecessary risks," the pair's coach Tatiana Moskvina told Reuters.

The European Championships will be held in Sheffield from January 23-29.
Japan-born Kavaguti and Smirnov would have been one of the favourites for the gold after winning their first European title in 2010 and finishing second last year behind Germany's Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy.
"We plan to resume training soon and I hope we will be well prepared for the world championships," Moskvina added.
The world championship will take place in Nice, France, from March 26 to April 1.
The Russian figure skating federation said Kavaguti and Smirnov's place would go to Ksenia Stolbova and Fyodor Klimov, who finished second at last month's national championships.
